自動詞・他動詞の使い分け　Vol.9

marry：
He married her.（他動詞）
彼は彼女と結婚した。
= He got married to her.（こちらのほうが口語的）

「〜と結婚する」という意味のmarryは他動詞ですが、get marriedという句動詞は自動詞なので、後に前置詞のtoを必要とします。

「〜と結婚している」という状態を表すbe marriedのmarriedは過去分詞の形容詞的用法です。

He was married to her.
彼は彼女と結婚していた。

他動詞としてのmarryには、「（親が子を）結婚させる」「（牧師などが）結婚式をとり行う」といった意味もあります。

Kate's father married her to a rich man.（他動詞）
ケイトの父親は彼女を金持ちと結婚させた。

The priest married Ben and Jessie.（他動詞）
牧師はベンとジェシーの結婚式をとり行った。


search：
The police searched his house.（他動詞）
警察が彼の家を捜索した。

The police searched for the suspected killer.（自動詞）
警察は殺人の容疑者を捜した。

The police searched the house for the criminal.（他動詞）
警察は犯人を見つけようと家宅捜索した。

The police searched the suspect for the stolen diamonds.（他動詞）
盗まれたダイヤを見つけるため、警察は容疑者に厳重な身体検査をした。
