自動詞・他動詞の使い分け　Vol.11

say/speak/tell：
The father said to the child, "Stay there."（自動詞）
父親は子どもに「そこにいなさい」と言った。

The father told the child to stay there.（他動詞）
父親は子どもにそこにいるように言った。

The man told her to pay her bill.（他動詞）
= The man said to her, "Pay your bill."（自動詞）

The man asked her to pay her bill.（他動詞）
= The man said to her, "Please pay your bill."（自動詞）

I'll speak to my brother about it.（自動詞）
そのことは兄に話しておこう。

I'll tell my brother about it.とは言いますが、I'll speak my brother about it.とは言いません。"write"の場合は、次のどちらの言い方も可能です。

I'll write to my brother about it.（自動詞）
I'll write my brother about it.（他動詞）


shoot：
The hunter shot at the fox.（自動詞）
ハンターはそのキツネを目がけて撃った。

自動詞の「shoot at 〜」は「〜を狙って撃つ」という意味ですが、命中したかどうかは不明です。他動詞の「shoot〜」は「〜を撃つ、撃ち殺す」という意味で、「命中した」という意味を含みます。ただし、命中して死んだかどうかまでは不明なので、「撃ち殺した」と言いたいときには「shot 〜 dead」や「shot and killed 〜」を使うと明らかになります。

The hunter shot the fox dead.（他動詞）
ハンターはそのキツネを撃ち殺した。

The man was shot and killed.（他動詞）
その男は撃ち殺された。
= The man was shot dead.（他動詞）
